When it comes to arranging your sectional sofas, address flow, accessibility, balance and comfort; everything else is fair game. In decor, there are a few guiding principles, such as scale and color coordination, that you should follow for harmony. With a better understanding of furniture placement, you’ll create a laid-back and relaxed atmosphere that simply makes sense in any space.

With their chaise-lounge ends, large footstools, wedge-shape corner seats and bulky design, sectional sofas can seem awkward to position. People often push larger furnishings against walls, assuming that that’s the only option. In any space designed for social gathering or visiting, such as the living or family room, you want to form an intimate, cozy seating arrangement.

Place your coffee table or the sectional’s footstool in the center of the room. Pull your sectional sofa comfortably in and around the table or padded stool, leaving room for accessing the seating and pushing out a recliner's footstool. Ensure the arrangement doesn't block an entry or doorway to the space. Use the open area behind the couch as a computer-desk nook or a place to group plants.

Due to the often large scale of sectional sofas, a room can appear to sink or be weighed down on one side, if you don't create balance. Position the sofa across from another weighty piece of furniture, such as a large entertainment stand, cushy armchair, oversized bookcases or stately fireplace, for a sense of stability or levelness.

As a last resort to create proportion, break up the modular system and place the pieces tactically facing each other, at right or 45-degree angles. The chair parts with their connector pieces on the sides can seem disjointed or odd when placed separately; the unit, after all, was designed to link together as one unified sofa.

Instead of breaking up the parts, rearrange them to make a room appear more symmetrical. For example, switch the chaise sides, and situate a complementary chair, in the same scale as the sectional, across from the armless lounger.

Typically, you place furniture at right angles within a room to make the most of every inch. This configuration, as common and acceptable as it is for sectional sofa placement, is less casual than angled seating.

If you have generous square footage, back the longest section of a modular couch into the corner opposite the entry or door to the room. With the arrangement now facing the entry point, the space will appear easily accessible, open and inviting. If the unit has an armless, interchangeable chaise lounge, keep this section away from the entry side.

A chair’s back and sides act as a half-wall, but without arms, the seat is less visible and could be a tripping hazard, or will seem to be in the way. Use the empty corner behind the sectional to stand a floor lamp or tall plant. Angle an unobtrusive chair -- keeping it easy to maneuver around when accessing the room -- across from the larger seating counterpart for balance.

Position a rounded sectional sofa around a circular area rug that’s placed in the middle of a square or slightly angular space, or in the common area of an open-design home. The access side of the arrangement should strategically face the room’s entryway or the television, if TV viewing is the room’s main purpose.

Leave at least 3 feet (the average hallway width) in front of the entrance and around the modular unit for easy access. The arrangement will feel comfortable and friendly, and appear as a relaxed nest or conversation area.

If you’re left with a lot of extra space around this focal setting, create secondary groups of leisure or chatting points with a comfy reading chair set by a dainty side table and lamp, a rattan table-for-two or a sun-soaking pair of recliners in front of a picture window.
